Man shot, killed over pair of tennis shoes in Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said a man was shot and killed over a pair of tennis shoes.

The shooting occurred at Pine Ridge Gardens Apartments on Rebel Woods Drive around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26.

According to Wade, the 44-year-old victim was approached by the suspect who wanted his tennis shoes. Police said the suspect was identified as 23-year-old Curtis “Scooter” Sawyer. He allegedly took a pair of red Jordan gym shoes from the victim before shooting him in the head.

A warrant was obtained for the arrest of Sawyer for capital murder. Rankin County deputies later located Sawyer around 7:30 p.m., and a chase ensued. Police said Sawyer was arrested after the chase and is now in JPD custody.

Sawyer made his initial appearance in court on Wednesday, November 27. He was denied bond.
