How can I protect my packages from porch pirates?

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A study by SafeWise showed that 32-percent of people installed a security camera after a package theft in 2023.

An estimated 120 million packages were stolen in 2023, according to an analysis by SafeWise. An estimated $16 billion was lost to porch pirates last year.

“If you’re a victim of a theft, of course, contact the police department. But the first thing I would do, if I was a victim of a porch pirate, is confirm the delivery. Check with your neighbors. Maybe it was delivered to the wrong address and that was my neighborhood. Packages get delivered to neighbors all the time,” said Captain Josh Frazier, with the Clinton Police Department.

Amazon is one of the most targeted brands, topping the list with 33-percent of reported thefts. USPS and FedEx follow behind.

Frazier said they are ways to prevent your goods from being stolen.

“Me, personally, I have them delivered here to the police department. A lot of people in their workplaces allow them to have packages delivered. And I’m here most of the day, so packages get delivered here. If I’m not here, somebody I trust is here to receive them. But you can do the same thing at your house. You can have your neighbors go over there and get your package and take them inside. Doorbell cameras are another good way to prevent package thieves,” he said.

A study by SafeWise showed the U.S. sees 261,000 incidents of package theft every day.
