HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT) – An Oak Grove High School student has been hospitalized in Jackson after she was allegedly stabbed by another student with a knife.

The senior student, whose mother did not want to identify her, is recovering from surgery. The 18-year-old was stabbed by another student in the school restroom on December 4, 2024, according to officials.

Her mother, Tiara Brown, said it’s been an emotional week.

“Today, we got a flow of tears just because of the pain. I think she’s tired of trying to be strong, and she’s just really just letting out how she really feels today,” said Brown.

The teenager underwent surgery to repair her main artery, which was punctured by the knife. Her mother said she was also stabbed multiple times across her chest, face and arms.

“It was seven stab wounds, and she has a slice to the face considering the wounds. And then the surgery, opening up her chest, and everything, it’s a lot of trauma to her body, and it’s not like she got a finger cut, this is something major. And so right now, it’s just overcoming the pain, because that’s what’s stopping her from being able to breathe, and just, you know, walk around and do all the things that they need to do,” Brown said.

The student’s mother said she’s okay, but she has lot feeling in her right hand. She’s undergoing physical and respiratory therapy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC).

As for the attack, Brown said she never thought something so vicious would happen to her daughter.

“I just hope that it never happens again. It’s been, it is very traumatizing. It’s a feeling that I really can’t describe, but I just hate that it happened and especially to my child. You just don’t think that you’re going to get that type of information,” she said.

Lamar County deputies said the student who was arrested was charged with aggravated assault, disruption of a school function and possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Investigators said anyone with video before, during or after the incident can send it to sheriff@lamarcounty.gov.
