Man sentenced for ammunition offense involving shooting of MHP trooper

ABERDEEN, Miss. (WJTV) – A man was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for his illegal possession of ammunition during an incident in which a Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) trooper was shot.

Stanley Self, Jr., 25, has been previously convicted of multiple felony offenses, including robbery and aggravated assault, and was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.

On May 2, 2023, a trooper conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Self in Bolivar County. Prosecutors said Self fled from the trooper, leading him on a chase through the county. He eventually lost control of the vehicle, and shot Trooper Ryan Watson.

According to prosecutors, the firearm was never recovered in this case, but the shell casings were recovered. Self was later arrested at an apartment complex in Brandon, Mississippi.

During Self’s sentencing hearing in Aberdeen, Watson testified about the speed of the chase, the dangerousness to the public at large during the chase, and the impact that being shot. Watson said he has not been able to return to active duty due to the serious nature of the injuries that he suffered.

Self will serve this sentence concurrently with any sentence that he receives for state offenses relating to this incident.
