SHARKEY COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Officials with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) announced the record for the largest black bear in the Black Bear Program’s history has been broken.
M18 is a 510-pound black bear that was collared earlier this week in Sharkey County. According to MDWFP, the bear shattered the previous record of 468 pounds.
Officials said M18 was originally collared in August 2022 and weighed 360-pounds at the time. They said he managed to slip out of the first collar shortly after he was caught.
“This recent capture provided an opportunity to safely gather current data as well as record his impressive growth before releasing him once again. An awesome addition to MDWFP’s Black Bear Program research!” MDWFP officials said.
