JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The City of Jackson is one step closer to demolishing Hotel O. They expect the demolition to begin sometime in January.
According to Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba, the city is awaiting a review by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).
The eyesore off of I-55 has caused problems for several nearby businesses and residents. From drugs to other illegal activities, Jackson police said the hotel has become a hot spot for crime.
“We anticipate receiving a response from MDEQ very soon here, and we expect that approximately within the next two weeks. Once we receive notice, we will schedule the actual date for the demolition. So, we cannot proceed without the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality’s approval. Once we receive that, then we will move forward,” Lumumba siad.
The owner of the hotel, Noah Muthana, has been fighting the demolition, despite a judge issuing an arrest warrant for him earlier this year.
