JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A local community leader said one of his outreach centers was damaged due to a drunk driver.

Albert Wilson, the executive director of the Genesis and Light Youth Development Center in Jackson, said he received a call from Jackson police just after 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 12. He said officers informed him that a drunk driver crashed into the Albert Wilson S.T.E.A.M. Empowerment Building.

“It was discouraging to see the damage that was done, but it was encouraging that she didn’t lose her life. And more importantly, our kids weren’t here or our clients. The seniors weren’t here during the week, where it would have been a whole lot worse if we had someone else in the building while that took place,” he said.

Wilson said the female driver suffered minor injuries and was taken into custody by Jackson police. Detective Tommie Brown identified the woman as Erica Evans, 45. She was charge with DUI.

According to Wilson, the building received about $50,000 worth of damage.
