CLINTON, Miss. (WJTV) – Freezing temperatures can pose serious health hazards to the human body.
Frostbite, hyperthermia, chills and loss of limbs are just a few of the things that can happen after prolonged exposure.
“Uncontrolled shivering is usually one of the first signs that you’re starting to get hypothermic and that body temp starts dropping below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and so shivering. And then you may start noticing that people become a little lethargic. Then they may get blue in the face and hands and maybe a little pale, and then the shivering stops. And this is a progression to the point where they may become unresponsive,” said Dr. David Wheat, with Clinton Family Care.
Health officials said you should remove wet clothing, limit sweating and dress appropriately to limit the risk of becoming a victim to the cold.
If you start to experience any severe symptoms from the extreme cold, seek medical attention.
