HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said construction on Phase 1 of the new Hinds County Detention Center is underway, and officials are working to gain funding for Phases 2 and 3.

Phase 1 is expected to cost up to $65 million. The new facility will replace the current Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond.

Jones believes the new facility will allow Hinds County to attract more personnel to join the ranks of the sheriff’s office.

“It’s progress. You know, we have been plagued with several challenges with detention services for many, many years. You know, we are at a point now where progress is being made, and we believe will be beneficial to the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, the men and women that operate the jail on a daily basis, as well as the public, so that we can rid ourselves of some of the challenges that we’ve been facing with our jail for many years. So, this is very good,” said Jones.

The sheriff hopes Phase 1 will be complete by Summer 2026.
