CLINTON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Clinton Fire Department said windy weather contributed to the destruction of a home during a fire on Saturday, February 15.

Clinton Fire Chief Jeff Blackledge said the two-story home on Chestnut Drive was fully engulfed when crews arrived. County fire crews were also called in to help extinguish the flames.

The home and three vehicles were destroyed. No one was injured, but a family pet died during the fire.

Blackledge said firefighters had plenty of water, but the strong winds made their jobs very difficult.

“He had 6,000 gallons of water on Clinton’s trucks and another 15,000 gallons of water with the county that came in to help us. We were doing a relay pump, what we call a relay pumping and shoveling of water. So, it was not for a lack of water that we had on set, but we just attacked it from the outside, put as much water on as we could. Weather was not on our side. We had 40 to 70-mile-an-hour winds out there at that time. So, you can imagine what was happening to the flames. It was being blown. We had embers blowing over into the neighbors’ yards, neighbors’ houses and everything. So, we feel pretty, pretty good, pretty blessed that we were able to keep it contained,” the fire chief said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
