HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The man accused of killing Hinds County Deputy Martin Shields, Jr., died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to interim Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said Shields, 37, was shot and killed while responding to a domestic call for service on Midway Road in Terry on Sunday, February 23. The sheriff said the suspect, Eric Brown, was found deceased inside a residence.

Jones said Brown is believed to be the suspect in the death of Shields, and the shooting of Brown’s wife and a female accomplice at the location.

According to Jones, Shields had been employed with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office for nine months. Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said Shields worked at the Jackson Police Department (JPD) from 2017 to 2020.

Shields’ patrol vehicle has been parked outside the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office in downtown Jackson as a memorial.
