JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The former Edwards police chief, who also previously served as a Jackson police officer, has been sentenced on a federal charge.

Torrence Mayfield, 53, was sentenced to two years in prison after he pled guilty to making a false statement to a firearms dealer in the acquisition of a firearm.

According to court documents, Mayfield purchased a firearm for another person on October 26, 2021. The purchase was made at a pawn shop which is a Federal Firearms Licensee.

Prosecutors said Mayfield was required to complete a written form to purchase the firearm. On that form, Mayfield indicated that he was purchasing the firearm for himself, not someone else. Prosecutors said the statement was false, and it is against federal law to make a false statement to a firearm dealer to acquire a firearm.

Mayfield was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and serve three years of supervised release. He has until noon on April 21, 2025, to report to prison.
