JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A large fire in Jackson caused delays on Interstate 220 Wednesday morning.
The fire caused smoke to go over I-220 between the Industrial Drive and Medgar Evers Boulevard exits.
The fire started in a junkyard on College Hill Drive. Officials with the Jackson Fire Department (JFD) said strong winds and an abundance of brush and materials are making it hard to battle the fire.
Firefighters had to use equipment to cut down trees and vegetation in order to contain the fire. Assistant Jackson Fire Chief Patrick Armon said firefighters from Raymond and Pocahontas have also responded to help with the situation.
Every few minutes, explosions could be heard from the cars, boats and other hazardous materials in the area. Businesses in the area hope the fire will not continue to spread.
The Mississippi Forestry Commission (MFC) and other state agencies have responded to the scene to monitor the damage and effects of the fire. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) will conduct air quality testing in the area.
