Would tariffs be costly for Mississippians?

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – President Donald Trump is exempting U.S. automakers from new tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, but other tariffs for agricultural products and more remain in place.

Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson (R-Miss.) said these are just the latest developments in a trade war that’s been waged for several years. Canada and China unveiled retaliatory tariffs this week, and Mexico is expected to on Sunday.

Mississippi exported more than $313 million in agricultural and other products to Canada, Mexico and China in 2024. These latest tariffs could be costly for the state.

Gipson had a message for the farmers in Mississippi.

“If we keep doing what we’ve been doing, we’re going to keep getting what we’ve been getting. And what American farmers have been getting is the shaft from all of the international trade issues for the last four or five years. It has hurt us because that’s the reason why our ag product prices are lower than they should be, because we’re not, we’ve not been exporting around the world to these other nations,” he said.

Medical gear, telecom equipment and automobiles are also products that Mississippi exports each year to the targeted countries.
