Inmate dies after being found unresponsive at federal prison in Mississippi

YAZOO CITY, Miss. (WJTV) – An inmate died after being found unresponsive at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Yazoo City Medium in Yazoo City.

The incident occurred on Saturday, March 22 around 8:30 a.m.

Officials said responding employees initiated life-saving measures on Christopher Eric Shoemake, 53. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was notified.

According to officials, Shoemake was sentenced in the Eastern District of Missouri to a 12-month one-day sentence for a supervised release violation of attempt to manufacture methamphetamine. He had been in custody at FCI Yazoo City Medium since February 26, 2025.
