LAMAR COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – Severe weather caused damage across parts of the Pine Belt on March 31, including an EF-2 tornado in southwest Lamar County.
The Lamar County Emergency Management confirmed the tornado uprooted several trees and damaged between 20 and 25 homes. The hardest hit areas were Johnson Road, McGraw Road and Luther Saucier Road.
“These people are devastated, and they’re doing without. And we don’t want them to do without anything else, and they don’t have the money to fix it. So, anybody that wants to help it could help, you know, because everybody that lives in this neighborhood over here, are not very well off. They’re living on a budget, on a small income doing the best they can do,” said Bobby Bates, who helped his neighbors on Monday.
While debris has been cleared from the roads, electrical and cleanup crews are still working in the area. Damage was also reported in the Pine Burr area of Marion County.
According to a National Weather Service (NWS) team, the tornado reached 135 mph. No injuries have been reported.
