JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A man was convicted of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and murder in connection to the death of his brother during a traffic stop in Jackson nearly seven years ago.
Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens said Chauncy Reed was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC). He was also sentenced to 20 years for attempted murder, which will run concurrently.
On May 19, 2018, Jackson Police Officer Michael Tarrio, while on duty, initiated a traffic stop of
two brothers in a white SUV near the Valero gas station on Cooper Road. As Tarrio approached the vehicle, the driver, who was identified Elliot Reed, assaulted Tarrio while trying to obtain the officer’s service weapon.

Surveillance footage captured the incident, showing Chauncy Reed, exiting the vehicle, aiming an assault-style rifle, and attempting to shoot the officer. Owens said a shootout ensued, which resulted in the death of Elliot Reed.
Chauncy Reed was arrested on charges of felony murder.
