JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A K-9 was injured during an officer-involved shooting in Jackson.
The incident happened in the area of Interstate 55 and McDowell Road on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said a Capitol police officer was conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle on McDowell Road when another unrelated vehicle approached and opened fire on the officer.
Martin said the officer fired his weapon and struck the suspect, who fled the scene. She said the unidentified suspect stopped at the Marathon gas station on Gallatin Street and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to Martin, a K-9 inside the officer’s patrol vehicle was also injured during the incident. Martin said the Capitol police officer was not seriously physically injured.
Mississippi DPS Commissioner Sean Tindell said the K-9 is expected to make a full recovery.
“After an overnight stay at the vet, it was determined the K-9 was not shot but was injured by shrapnel after a bullet struck a metal component inside the officer’s vehicle. Please continue to keep both the officer and our K-9 in your thoughts and prayers as they recover,” Tindell said.

Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) will investigate the shooting and will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
