HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – A death investigation is underway after a detainee was found unresponsive at the Hinds County Detention Center.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said Anthony Terrell Johnson, 37, was found unresponsive in his cell around 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22.

According to Jones, Johnson had been assaulted, and his cause of death is under investigation. He said agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) are conducting the investigation.

Johnson was taken into custody on April 20, 2025, by Capitol police for simple assault and auto theft.
