UPDATE:
JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The lockdown at Jim Hill High School has been lifted, according to JPS officials.
According to Jackson police, there was an altercation that involved multiple people at the school. Once the individuals exited the school building, shots were fired.
Jim Hill Principal Bobby Brown said the incident involved three current Jim Hill students and another individual, who was not a student at the high school.
Police said multiple shell casings were found on the campus of the high school. Students and staff were not injured.
“You know, that’s why I pray every day, because it could be school anywhere. What’s going on and what happened, I’m just happy that nothing happened. No one was injured. So that’s a blessing,” said Shantae Ranson, a parent.
Officials said JPS police, Capitol police and Jackson police are continuing with their investigation.
JPS released the following statement to WJTV 12 News.
This afternoon, an incident occurred outside Jim Hill High School in which shots were fired. No students, staff, or visitors were injured. Out of an abundance of caution, the school was immediately placed on lockdown to ensure the safety of everyone on campus. The lockdown was later lifted, and students and staff resumed normal activities.
Local law enforcement agencies, including JPS Police, Capitol Police, Jackson Police, Hinds Sherriff Department and U.S. Marshals responded swiftly and are actively investigating the situation. Those responsible will be held fully accountable under state and federal laws. At least on suspect has been apprehended. As the investigation continues, any additional individuals identified will also face appropriate legal consequences.
We are aware of false information circulating on social media, including claims of an active shooter inside the school. We want to emphasize that there was never an active shooter inside Jim Hill High School or shots fired inside the school. The threat to safety occurred outside the school, and at no time were students or staff in direct danger within the building.
The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority.

During a lockdown, officials with the Jackson Public School District (JPS) said no students will be dismissed. They said all students and staff are safe inside their classrooms.
There are no injuries associated with this lockdown, despite some reports circulating on social media. We anticipate the lockdown will be lifted shortly and will provide more details once the investigation is complete.
