RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The Rankin County Board of Supervisors rescinded their vote on a new zoning ordinance.

On Monday, May 5, the supervisors unanimously rescinded their vote on the ordinance that passed on April 7.

The ordinance restricted mobile homes and required county approval for any accessory buildings on properties zoned for agriculture.

Hundreds of residents attended a town hall last week to demand a rollback of the vote. They said the ordinance threatened property rights and raised housing costs.

Supervisors Sid Scarbrough, Brad Calhoun and Steve Gaines apologized to residents. They said key details had been overlooked before the original vote, but some citizens remained skeptical.

“There is always a motive when you don’t give proper notification, when you have the vote at 9:00 a.m. in the beginning of the workweek and nobody knew about it. It’s a little underhanded,” said one resident.

The previous zoning rules are back in place for the county.
