CANTON, Miss. (WJTV) – Canton election officials are recounting the votes to see who will be the Democratic nominee in the upcoming mayoral election.

Comelia Walker called for a recount after she lost to Tim Taylor by just 43 votes in the runoff primary on April 22.

The candidates, their representatives and City Clerk Dr. Chuconna Anderson met at City Hall on Wednesday to begin reviewing the ballots.

Before the recount, there was a disagreement over how many representatives each candidate is allowed to have. Taylor brought two representatives, with one saying state statute doesn’t limit how many representatives are allowed. However, Secretary of State Michael Watson (R-Miss.) only allowed on representative per candidate.

As of Wednesday afternoon, ballots are still being counted.
