MDOT faces shutdown risk amid budget delays

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is bracing for a potential shutdown.

MDOT will begin sending out a 45-day notice on May 15 ahead of the new fiscal year, which starts July 1, 2025. The agency will let contractors, vendors and consultants know there’s a possibility of a work shutdown.

Mississippi lawmakers have yet to pass a budget for the upcoming fiscal year. It would impact MDOT projects across the state.

“On June 1, the preparations to shut down all work will begin with work fully stopping by June 30, assuming we do not have a budget agreed upon,” said Michael Flood, Public Information officer for MDOT.

MDOT said a shutdown could result in significant delays to unfinished projects.
