JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, said Hinds County taxpayers should not carry the cost of a new jail.

The councilman raised concerns after receiving a letter from the Hinds County Board of Supervisors. The letter outlined a plan to charge municipalities for housing their detainees at the new jail.

The board approved a rate of $31.25 for 31 days, including $6.25 per day for medical reimbursement. The county also plans to sign contracts with cities and state agencies to hold pretrial detainees.

Stokes said the move would shift the burden to taxpayers. He plans to bring the issue up at the next City Council meeting.
