HERNANDO, Miss. — DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton is looking for the public’s help after a recent Hernando homicide.

The homicide happened during an altercation at an event, Barton said. It appears the shooter and victim were spending time with the same female, he said.

At 6:51 p.m. May 17, officers of the Hernando Police Department responded to a 911 call regarding a physical altercation that led to one person being shot at the Avondale Apartments located in the 900 block of Hill Street.

They found a 41-year-old male victim and began administering life-saving measures to him until he was taken to Baptist DeSoto Hospital.

Edrick Thornton, 49, has been charged with murder. He is being held in jail on a $1 million bond, Barton said.

The passenger, identified as Keshay Jones, 35, has been charged with accessory after the fact and tampering with physical evidence. She has made bond, Barton said.

Barton asked the public to come forward with information on the case. He said there were dozens, possibly 50, people at a gathering who may have been witnesses to the crime.

While prosecutors have witnesses and what Barton believes is a strong case, he said he is a firm believer that more witnesses is better for the case.
