SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — Shots were fired during an altercation on Stateline Road in Southaven, Miss., after a man allegedly tried to run a police officer over in a stolen car.
At around 10:45 a.m., the Southaven Police Department responded to reports of a stolen vehicle located at the Sonic at 1185 Main Street. The suspect was found near the location, but when officers attempted to stop him, he allegedly rammed officers with the stolen car.
Police say the suspect tried to run over one of the officers, and shots were fired.
After a brief foot pursuit, the SPD says the suspect was taken into custody. There is no current danger to the public.
Stateline Road at Millbranch is completely closed at this time.
“Yeah, he was getting food at Sonic and the car, came up behind him, trapped them in so he couldn’t get out, but he backed up and they put the the tire poppers underneath his car, but he still got away to the main road, and that’s when they proceeded to shoot the bullets at the car.” said witness Brittany Cook.
“I was scared I was panicking and I was scared for my children because I didn’t even know what was actually going on,” said Cook.
WREG reported that Cook’s statement matches what SPD is reporting, that a man tried to leave the Sonic in a stolen vehicle as officers approached.
She told WREG the police shot at the vehicle, and then it started spinning out. Then the driver and a female passenger came to a stop at Captain D’s across the street. The woman was arrested immediately at Captain D’s. The man tried to outrun police on foot before he was tackled outside a nearby shop.
A nearby business owner said that customers ran into her store for safety as she saw the man running towards her business, and he was arrested just outside her door.
Southaven Police have not released the suspect’s name or charges he may face.
