Music celebration held for ‘Mama’ Mosie Burks

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Hundreds gathered in Jackson on Tuesday to celebrate the life of Gospel legend “Mama” Mosie Burks. The longtime soloist for the Mississippi Mass Choir passed away at the age of 92.

Burks spent decades lifting hearts through song. Her unmistakable voice and joyful spirit helped define the sound of the Mississippi Mass Choir, earning her fans across the globe.

“Whenever she entered the room, it’s like automatically we know that we had entered into a place where God is. She just had a spirit like none other,” said Cherrish Adam, a member of the choir.

Family, friends and fans filled Greater Fairview Baptist Church on Tuesday to honor her legacy. The musical celebration featured powerful tributes and soul stirring performances, as people shared their love for Burks.

She joined the choir in the mid-1990s and become known for several hits, including “I’m Not Tired Yet,” and “When I Rose This Morning.”

Her final performance with the Mississippi Mass Choir happened during their 50th anniversary celebration in 2020.
