JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – People traveled to Jackson to pay their respects to a Gospel music legend.

Family, friends and community members gathered at Greater Bethlehem Temple Apostolic Church on Wednesday for “Mama” Mosie Burks’ funeral.

Joining the Mississippi Mass Choir in the mid-1990s, Burks went on to popularize traditional Gospel music while putting Mississippi on a national stage. In just under 30 years, her talents were heard and celebrated by millions of people.

“It was a joy to sing with her. She was one of the most sweetest people that I ever met. And, you know, and just the energy that she gives, it’s just inspiring,” said Ronald Young, a member of the Mississippi Mass Choir.

Burks is known for several hits with the choir, including “I’m Not Tired Yet,” and “When I Rose This Morning.” Her final performance with the Mississippi Mass Choir happened in 2020.
