VICKSBURG, Miss. (WJTV) – Robert M. Walker, the first Black mayor elected in the City of Vicksburg, has died.

The City of Vicksburg made the announcement on their Facebook page on July 29.

Walker was elected as the city’s first Black mayor in 1988. During his tenure, Walker prioritized economic development, infrastructure improvement and civic engagement.

His enduring impact is permanently recognized through the Robert M. Walker Building, formerly the City of Vicksburg Annex Building, which was renamed in his honor as a tribute to his service and leadership.

Mayor Walker was more than a public official. He was an educator, mentor, historian, and man of God who inspired generations. His influence will continue to resonate through the lives he touched, the progress he championed, and the city he helped shape.
