JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police are investigating two separate shootings this weekend. One of the shootings resulted in the death of a child.
On Sunday, officers responded to Lampton Avenue. They said an 8-year-old boy found an unsecured gun at the home and was shot. His father, Kuaron Hilliard, is facing charges for leaving his son alone with access to the weapon.
“These parents are sad because they are losing their kids to gun violence. It is young folks around here that have guns. That is not safe,” said one neighbor.
One day earlier, a shootout occurred on Redwood Drive, which resulted in several homes and vehicles being struck by bullets. Five suspects were taken into custody.
One resident said he was sitting in his truck when the shootout occurred and wants answers from Jackson police.
“I can’t say they do enough to monitor, because I know for a fact that they are stretched thin. I know, I mean, I know they are understaffed. I get that. I guess the criminal element knows that, too. But something has to be done. I mean, what they’re doing now, what’s being done now, it’s not working,” the neighbor said.
For many residents, they’re asking for a stronger police presence across the capital city.
“There is too much violence going on around here. You could be at the red light, and you might get shot in the head for nothing. They need to provide more police in these areas,” a neighbor said.
The investigations are ongoing.
