JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A shooting in Jackson left eight people injured early Monday morning.

The shooting occurred near several businesses, including Loaded Lettuce. The co-owner, Christopher Deans II, said while the city faces growing violence, the community must take responsibility for the changing culture.

“We have a lot of violence in the city, and I want better. That’s one of the reasons why we started the business. And a lot of people are starting businesses here. We’re trying to do better, but we need everyone’s help to do that. When you go out, there has to be a way to de-escalate the situation besides going to get, you know, one of our many weapons of destruction,” said Deans.

He pointed to the increased activity in the area with two nightclubs across the street from each other. Deans said the real issue is the easy access young people have to guns.

“I hate that the young people, they take these actions with these weapons and sometimes they’re not even 20 years old, and they’ve thrown away their whole life. You know, when you’re standing in front of the judge, you don’t have friends with you. You know, your mom can’t save you,” he said.

The shooting victims are reported to be in stable condition.

No arrests have been made at this time. Anyone with information can contact the Capitol Police Department at 601-359-3125.
