JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Several community members and organizations gathered at the Jackson Hinds Comprehensive Health Center (JHCHC) to raise awareness about infant mortality in Mississippi.

In August 2025, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) declared a public health emergency in response to rising infant mortality rates across the state.

According to the agency, Mississippi’s 2024 data shows the overall infant mortality rate has increased to 9.7 deaths per 1,000 live births, which is the highest in more than a decade. In Mississippi, 3,527 babies have died before the age of 1 since 2014.

On September 19, 2025, health advocates, parents, children, health associations and Black Greek organizations met for the 3rd Annual “Step Loud Step Proud: Stomping Out Infant Mortality Summit.” The event included a panel with specialists, who provided advice and research information regarding infant mortality and reproductive and sexual health.

“We have all these great researchers. We have all these wonderful businesses that are coming in here. But if you don’t take care of the least of us, then what are we as a community?” questioned Dr. Jasmine Chapman, chief executive officer of JHCHC.

Guests had access to more than 20 vendors, who provided resources about family health care and child care.

The event concluded with performances by members of Omega Psi Phi, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
