MADISON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that occurred in Madison County.

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP), the crash occurred on Interstate 55 northbound near the 119-mile marker.

Gluckstadt police said they were notified about a stolen silver Ford Escape that was traveling north on the interstate. Officers located the vehicle near the 112-mile marker and attempted to stop it. Police said the driver refused to stop and led officers on a chase.

Investigators said the suspect’s vehicle left the road and struck a signage pole just before the Exit 119 ramp. They said both the driver and passenger were ejected from the vehicle.

The passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the driver died while in transport to a local hospital. Police said they have been unable to identify the driver and the passenger.

During the incident, police said one of their officers was involved in a separate accident while trying to avoid an object in the roadway. Both the officer and the other driver were unharmed.

The MHP Accident Reconstruction Unit is conducting the investigation into the fatal crash involving the stolen vehicle.
