1 killed, 1 injured during alleged vehicle theft in Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police said they are investigating a shooting that killed one person and injured another during an alleged vehicle theft.

Interim Jackson Police Chief and Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said officers responded to a crash in the 2800 block of Lakewood Drive on October 2, 2025.

According to Jones, the primary crime scene is believed to be a residence at the intersection of Lakewood Drive and McDowell Road. Investigators believe a 19-year-old approached an individual at the home and stole a vehicle.

Jones said a shootout occurred between the suspect and the victim. He said the 19-year-old was shot in the head. The suspect was found deceased inside the overturned vehicle.

Jones said the victim was shot in the leg and was transported by a private vehicle to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

Interim Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard identified the deceased person as Carnell Randolph, Jr. His body will be transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The injured victim has not been identified.

Police recovered one weapon at the scene, and they’re seeking the second weapon.
