6 killed, multiple injured in Leland mass shooting

LELAND, Miss. (WJTV) – Leland police are investigating after six people were killed during a shooting.

According to authorities, a total of 16 people were shot on October 10, 2025, which was the night of Leland High School’s homecoming game. The shooting occurred in the Main Street area of Leland.

According to Washington County Coroner LaQuesha Watkins, four of the victims were identified as Oreshama Johnson, 41; Calvin Plant, 19; Shelbyona Powell, 25; and Kaslyn Johnson, 18.

On October 11, 2025, Watkins said her office received a call from the Hinds County Coroner’s Office that another victim, Amos Brantley, Jr., 18, died from his injuries. Shortly afterwards, the Shelby County Medical Examiner reported that JaMichael Jones, 34, died from his injuries.

There’s no suspect information at this time.

“People were just congregating and having a good time in the downtown of Leland,” State Sen. Derrick T. Simmons said. He was told that after the gunfire, the scene was “very chaotic,” as police, sheriff’s deputies and ambulances “responded from all over.”

“Our state is praying for the victims and their families, as well as the entire Heidelberg and Leland communities. Those responsible will be brought to justice,” said Gov. Tate Reeves (R-Miss.).

Investigators said video evidence is being processed in the case.

Bailey Martin, spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MDPS), said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) will assist Leland police with the investigation. The ATF, FBI and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are also assisting in the investigation.
