Extra Table plans to increase aid amid SNAP freeze

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Hattiesburg-based food bank Extra Table has called on the Mississippi community to help feed families during the government shutdown.

In the midst of a freeze on SNAP benefits in November, Extra Table is aiming to help feed more families than usual. Due to the added numbers that will need assistance, Extra Table has started a new funding campaign to help raise additional funds.

Extra Table has served the Mississippi community for 15 years. Officials with the organization said they have never accepted government funding and have relied solely on community crowdfunding.

“When others can’t feed because of red tape, we can — and we do,” said Martha Allen Price, executive director of Extra Table. “We are not government subsidized. We don’t wait on funding cycles or approvals. Every dollar donated to Extra Table buys healthy food, and 100% goes directly to feeding people across Mississippi.”

Extra Table uses the donations to purchase and deliver truckloads of food, ensuring pantries receive proteins for every food bag, along with fruits, pasta, and other essential staples their clients need most.

Although officials don’t know the total impact the SNAP freeze will have on food banks, it is certain these pantries will be affected. Extra Table officials said they aim to add to or double the amount of food they currently have to help feed affected families through this new funding campaign.
