ADAMS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – A suspect was killed during an officer-involved shooting in Adams County.

Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said the shooting happened on Sunday, July 16 around 10:00 a.m. on Old Highway 84 in Natchez.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said a deputy was flagged down by a female victim. She allegedly told authorities she had been kidnapped and assaulted by her on again, off again boyfriend, Charoyd Bell.

Patten said the deputy called for backup. While the deputy was talking to the victim, Patten said Bell approached the two of them. The deputy was able to get the suspect to go back in his yard while he talked to the victim.

A second deputy arrived at the scene. Just before 10:10 a.m., deputies called out shots fired over their radios.

Patten said Bell had grabbed a hand gun, pointed at the victim and started shooting at the victim from his front yard. The victim and the deputies took cover behind the patrol units.

According to the sheriff, Bell made his way around the rear of the patrol units and shot the victim in the stomach. A deputy was able to return fire and hit Bell. The suspect’s weapon was recovered a the scene.

Patten said the deputies called for ambulances, and they rendered first aide to the victim and Bell. The Natchez Democrat reported Bell died.

The sheriff said deputies responded to the same location on July 15 just after 2:00 p.m. for a welfare check. He said they made contact with the victim and the suspect, who both said everything was okay at the residence. Patten said there was no indication that anything was wrong on Saturday.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating the shooting. Agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office. The deputies involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
